Legal stops being the manual layer over its own contracts
A legal or contracts team spends its day answering the same questions by hand: which version is current, who signed it, what we committed to, and where we landed on this clause last time. We build the systems that hold that record and answer those questions, so the work stops being lookup and goes back to judgment.
The contract record lives in email, a shared drive, and a few people's memory
A contract's life is spread across places that do not talk. The signed PDF sits in one folder, the version that was actually negotiated sits in an email thread, the obligations you agreed to sit in a spreadsheet someone keeps by hand, and the reason a clause reads the way it does lives in whoever negotiated it.
So the team becomes the lookup layer. Every 'is this the latest,' 'did we ever agree to this,' and 'what did we do here last time' routes through a person, and the answer is only as good as their memory of it.
The contract, its revisions, and its signatures become one controlled record
We move contracts into a database with an enforced, signed lifecycle: draft, in-review, approved, executed, with signatures captured under re-authentication and no one approving their own work. The current version is the one the system marks current, not the one someone remembers saving.
Every contract carries its own attributes, so counterparty, obligation, renewal date, and owner are things you filter and search on instead of fields buried in a document. An embedded agent reads across the record, answers with a citation to the contract and revision, and flags contradictions across active agreements, and every output is a proposal a person signs off.
Precedent and policy answer from your own controlled knowledge
The other half of legal's day is precedent: how you worded this indemnity before, what your position is on this liability cap, what policy allows here. Those answers live in executed contracts, in a playbook if one exists, and in the heads of the people who negotiated the deals.
We build a knowledge agent over that material. It reaches the formal record, the playbook, and the positions the team has taken, and tiles them into one answer you ask for in plain language. It takes knowledge in as well as out and grows from how the team uses it, so it does not go stale the way a one-time playbook does. When the person who knows the history moves on, the position stays.
